By Paula Detwiller Special to The Pineapple Time flies when you’re having fun. And that’s exactly what happens at the Delray GreenMarket every year. Seems like before you know it, the season is coming to an end, as it did on Saturday, May 11. Here are 5 of highlights from our 17th season: Opening Day (Oct. 13, 2012) Our debut market in the Old School Square Park was a big hit! Despite a few rain showers, spirits were high because for the first time in four years, the market got off the hot asphalt and onto green space again. Plus, the new location offered adjacent garage parking, playground equipment, seating, and public restrooms. Delightful! Live Nutcracker Performances (Dec. 8, 2012) With the arrival of the holidays came a “first” for the GreenMarket: young students from the Dance Academy of Boca Raton performing scenes from The Nutcracker ballet. It was a preview of two Nutcracker performances scheduled for that weekend at the Crest Theater. Who can forget the tiny ballerinas in tutus stepping through the market? Slow Food Saturday (Feb. 2, 2013) On this particular Slow Food Saturday, local farmers spoke to GreenMarket visitors about GMOs (genetically modified organisms) and the worldwide movement to ban them from our food. The presentation at the Slow Foods Glades to Coast booth tapped into a lot of local interest. Annual Chili Cook-Off (Feb 16, 2013) Bright, shiny weather and a soft, grassy venue helped bring out a huge crowd this year. The cook-off was so well attended many of the contestants ran out of samples. In the end, more than 75 gallons of chili was consumed, trophies were awarded, and a tasty GreenMarket tradition was further solidified. Annual Easter Bonnet Pet Parade (March 30, 2013) In a pleasant return to yester-year, judging took place on the shade-dappled front lawn of the Cornell Museum. Top honors went to a dog named Ivy who was celebrating her 12th birthday. Ivy’s colorful bonnet and flowery outfit won her Most Original and Best of Show prizes—and a “Happy Birthday” serenade from the crowd! These are our Top Five…do you agree?
