Delray Beach has a new community center for seniors thanks to Humana.
The health and well-being company selected Delray as the place to open its first Community location in Palm Beach County.
Located at 14570 S. Military Trail, the space will serve as an in-person customer service location for Humana members as well as a health and wellness center for the entire community.
“I am excited to have a place where we are all going to meet on a daily basis,” Humana Market Director for Palm Beach Bret Jennings said to the crowd during the March 7 grand opening.
Geared toward seniors eligible for Medicare, the center is one of 50 various Humana locations across the country. There are community centers like the Delray location and sales pop-ups. The first community location was opened in 2008 in Zephyrhills, Fla.
Open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday-Friday, the center will offer exercise classes, cooking demonstrations and seminars from doctors that are free and open to the public. A majority of the programs are offered to non-Humana members as well.
Jennings said Delray was selected as a location for a community center because of the number of Humana members in the area and because there was a market to help non-members as well. He said the Delray location has been in the works for several years.
“It’s giving back to the community,” he said. “It’s a relationship. It’s not transactional.”
Humana’s community locations are all about helping seniors stay active and healthy. This center features a community room for lectures and classes, a sales office, Wi-Fi, public computers, games and puzzles. It will be staffed with a full-time Humana customer service representative.
Calendar listings at the center include a weekly walking group, crochet club, Bingo and various seminars and demonstrations.
Keeping the center open to the public is part of Humana’s goal of making communities healthier by 20 percent by 2020 and beyond.
“This brings a smile to my face,” Jennings said of the opening.
