The No. 1 ranked girls tennis player by the International Tennis Federation can now open any door in the city, figuratively speaking.
Surrounded by her family and friends, Cori “Coco” Gauff was presented a key to the city last month by city commissioners.
“This is a very, very exciting night for us,” Mayor Petrolia said, calling Gauff a celebrity. “The city is behind you, supporting you 100 percent. We are so happy you call Delray Beach home.”
The 14-year-old Delray native can often be found practicing on the Pompey Park courts when she isn’t off playing in Wimbledon or the French Open.
Gauff became the youngest finalist at the U.S. Open in the girls’ singles event. She is the youngest to hold the No. 1 ranking as well.
