By Allison Turner Business, Marketing & Sales Consultant Each of us defines success in our own unique way and only you can define what success means for you! As a business owner or more importantly someone who starts a business for the very first time, you must have a business owner mindset where you are determined to do whatever it takes to see your business succeed. In the first couple years of a business, the attitude of the owner(s) has more to do with the success than anything else. Yes, you must have a great location, a superior product or service and know how to market the business but how you show up as the owner is even more vital. Compare owning a business to being a successful athlete, how you show up on the court or field and play the game dictates your achievements. Yes, you must have the fundamentals of the sport but most business owners have a great idea for a product or service but if they don’t truly believe in themselves to execute that vision, their business will not make it. Below are 5 Tips to keep your business on the path to success. 1. 100% Commitment: Starting a business is similar to birthing a child. Once you have that child, you can’t decide not to take care of the child one day. You must be all in, so when you are thinking about starting a business, look at your existing life and know what you are gaining and what you may be giving up. A new business takes time to brand and build. The greatest gift you give your business is 100% commitment! I work with many entrepreneurs and small business owners who have many different irons in the fire. They are starting a new business yet they also have many distractions such as working another job or finding other ways to bring in income. While I understand the need for security, when you really commit to your business, you see more and more doors open up than ever before. 2. Belief: Your belief in the value of your product or service must be strong at all times. In business, if you don’t truly believe in what you are selling, it will show to any potential customers. More importantly, your belief in you is essential. That dictates how you show up in the community and with clients and employees. 3. Keep Your Intention on your Vision: Every business needs a vision. Where do you want to be in one year or three years? Day to day operations of your business will continue to exist but you must always keep your eye on the larger picture. That helps maintain your passion for the company you are building! 4. Focused Attention: When you are in the office or working with a client, you must maintain that focus. While being able to manage many different projects or roles at the same time is important, you also must know how to give all of your focus to one task or person at a time. Your clients, employees and projects will feel the difference. 5. Confidence vs. Fear: Having a business can be scary because ultimately you the business owner are responsible for everything – the success, the systems, the employees, etc. I have had clients who operated from the place of fear and it showed directly in the results of their business. Owning a business is a blessing in many ways but you must play full out each and every day to build your success. Be aware of how you can improve yourself, which will ultimately improve your business. In my consulting, I end up coaching on many of these attributes because they tie so directly to the success of the business. When you implement these tips on a daily basis, your business will continue to grow and thrive.
