20 Questions: Silvana D’Mikos


Silvana D’Mikos is an interdisciplinary artist from Uraguay. She studied sculpture in Brazil and is currently working in Miami in diverse media: sculpture, digital images, sound and motion graphics, as well as works on paper. Her work experiments with a wide range of materials, including light and transparency, incorporating the physical confines of the space as art in her installations. pineapple-newspaper-silvana-dmarkos Silvana’s work often focuses on controversial social issues. Global sustainability is an important concept and evident in both her “Disaster” and “Slash and Burn” series of collages; both which were on display at The Gallery at Art House in the“SUSTAIN” exhibition which ran April 12th – May 23rd. Using recycled handmade paper, Silvana creates a body of work that reflects our interactions with the earth, the environment and ultimately with our lives. What is your idea of perfect happiness? Live in peace with myself and in harmony with others and the environment. What is your greatest fear? Not having any new ideas Which living person do you most admire? Dalai Lama Where do you find artistic inspiration? Inside myself and thru my interactions with others and with the social, political and environmental issues that surround us. Who is your favorite artist? There are many, but to name one I would say Bill Viola. Viola’s work brilliantly talks about emotions and reflects on life’s existential issues. What do you consider the most overrated virtue? Obedience Which words or phrases do you most overuse? Let’s see Which talent (other than being an artist) would you most like to have? Being an acrobat in a circus When and where were you happiest? When a new work is finished or when I arrive on the top of a mountain. What or who is the greatest love of your life? Inspiration and creation What is your greatest regret? I have always embraced the challenges and opportunities that life has presented to me and I do not have any regrets. When did your first know that you had to become an artist? I always liked to create things but I really decided to dedicate myself to art when I moved to Brazil and left my job as nurse to become a full time artist. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? Being more audacious. What do you consider your greatest artistic achievement? My greatest artistic achievement is yet to come. If you were to die and come back as a person or thing, what do you think it would be? An eagle. What is your most treasured possession? My health. What do you most value in your friends?
