5 Questions With Artist Mark Thompson

  1. Tell us about yourself and how you got into your career.

By education and experience I had been a therapist and administrator in the substance abuse field for over 20 years. As a means by which to unwind and detach I took up the hobby of photography a number of years ago. I got introduced to light painting by accident one day while surfing the internet. I saw a very cool image of someone’s art, thought to myself “I can do that” and the rest is history. Through a mutual friend I met Dave Lustrup, a lifelong photographer who was also a fan of light painting and it was through our artistic collaboration we decided to start Shot In the Dark, LLC.

  1. What is light painting?

The very definition of photography is “writing with light.” Light painting is a form of long exposure photography. What we do is take an external light source and use it to illuminate something that is already there (light painting) or to create something that isn’t (light drawing).  The shutter on our cameras can be open for anywhere from 5-60 seconds depending on the project. This is typically done at night or in dark environments, hence our name “Shot In the Dark.”

  1. What is your favorite subject to photograph?

Dave and I are discovering joy in bringing our work to people who have never seen light painting. Each new project, be it a car, a motorcycle, a place, product or person allows us to expand our horizons and learn new techniques. I think it’s fair to say that whatever we shot last is our favorite subject. Very frequently, Dave and I will have what we need long before we stop shooting. Light painting is only limited by one’s imagination and creativity.

  1. Where can we find your work?

Being a new venture, our exposure thus far has been limited to social media and our company website. We have developed a body of work which we hope to exhibit and offer to the general public in the near future. As our desire is to integrate light painting and traditional photography, we hope that our work can soon be found in people’s personal portfolio’s as well. 1. Why did you choose Delray Beach to call home?

Dave is a lifelong resident of South Florida, having grown up in Broward County.  I moved to Delray Beach from Sarasota in 2004.  I moved here because Delray Beach was rich in employment opportunities in my field. I’ve stayed here for the last 15 years due to the great vibe Delray has to offer.
