Alderman Farms: Where Organic Farming Is A Point of Pride

Those of us who buy organic produce know it can look imperfect. Fruits and vegetables grown without pesticides or herbicides may have a little blemish here, a little wormhole there, maybe some asymmetric shapes or uneven colors. But that’s okay, right? We’re happy to be eating nutritious food grown without chemicals. So it may surprise you to learn that “imperfect” is not okay to the Delray GreenMarket’s organic produce supplier, Alderman Farms of Boynton Beach. “On Friday evenings, my husband would go through every vegetable individually to decide what to bring and what not to bring to the GreenMarket,” said Theresa Alderman, whose husband Jim runs the farm with his father, Jim Alderman Sr. “It’s unbelievable—so of course, everything looks perfect, even though most people know that organic produce isn’t supposed to look perfect,” Theresa said. Look for the Label Alderman Farms has been growing both certified organic and conventionally grown produce in Palm Beach County for more than 30 years. Their 300-acre organic farm is located in Loxahatchee, and they have other farms spreading from Delray Beach to Boynton Beach. Organic crops include bell pepper, mini-sweet pepper, yellow squash, zucchini, sweet bi-color corn, eggplant, green beans, and three types of tomatoes (cherry, Roma and round). In the fall, winter and spring, you can find Alderman Farms organic produce at the Delray GreenMarket and at Whole Foods and Publix (Greenwise section of produce department). Just look for the Alderman Farms label. Expansion Plans Unfortunately, extreme heat and humidity prevents Alderman Farms from growing their produce locally during the summer. For that reason, Theresa said, the farm is currently looking for suitable land in Georgia, South Carolina and New Jersey in order to keep its tomatoes, herbs, squash and zucchini business going through the summer. “Jim and his dad are really passionate about organic farming,” Theresa said. “Take it from me, he’s never home. He’s always out there making sure everything is just right.”
