Delray Beach Public Library Centennial Young Adult Creative Writing Contest A Great Success!

In honor of the Delray Beach Public Library’s Centennial Celebration the Library’s Young Adult Department in cooperation with Florida Atlantic University’s Creative Writing Department launched a Young Adult Creative Writing Contest open to all Middle School and High School students in Palm Beach County. The theme of the contest was Historical Fiction in the form of a short story or poem set in Delray Beach in 1913. The contest received 119 entries and the winners were selected by the Florida Atlantic University’s Creative Writing Department. All the winners received merchandise from Levenger, “tools for the serious reader, were recognized at the Library’s Centennial Community Day and the first place prize winners attended the Library’s Centennial Birthday Bash and attended a writing workshop with Frank McKinney (5-time international best-selling author) in his famous tree house. The winners were: Middle School Poetry: First place: Ryan Milbert, “A Farm Boy’s Fantasy” – Woodlands Middle School Second place: Madeline Claire Uible, “untitled” – Gulfstream Middle School Third place: Helen Huisinga, “The Newly Built Library” – Gulfstream Middle School High School Poetry: First place: Nicholas DeMartino, “Delray, Here to Stay!” – Spanish River High School Second place: Antoine Schneider, “September 11th, 1903,” – Spanish River High School Third place: Emily Allen, “The Library,” – Spanish River High School Middle School Short Story: First place: Kaitlyn Short, no title – Woodlands Middle School Second place: Natalie Nevin, no title – Woodlands Middle School Third place: (tie): Rumana Ali, no title – Woodlands Middle School Jasmine Mendez, no title – Woodlands Middle School High School Short Story: First place: Jessica Luzadas, no title, Spanish River High School.
