More than 90 members and guests attended a meeting of the Greater Boca Raton Estate Planning Council (GBREPC) on February 19 at the newly named GEO Group Stadium on the Florida Atlantic University campus in Boca Raton. The dinner and educational session was graciously sponsored by US Trust and featured David Ratcliffe of US Trust who spoke on the topic of “ Asking the Philanthropic Question.” With 30 years in the field, Ratcliffe is an alumnus of Wake Forest University and is currently the National Sales Executive for US Trust Philanthropic Solutions. “We feel that advisors are focused mostly on tax benefits or transferring wealth to family and often times philanthropy becomes a secondary conversation,” said Ratcliffe. “Often it is never brought up unless the client mentions it themselves. What I am attempting to share with the tax, legal and financial community is that it is possible to integrate philanthropy into a client’s overall wealth management and wealth transfer plan in order to impact both philanthropic and non-philanthropic interests.” Lanny Marks, GBREPC president, announced the recipients of GBREPC scholarships. A total of $6,250 in scholarship awards were given to Florida Atlantic University, Lynn University, Palm Beach State College and five local area high schools. In addition, $500 in monetary and food donations were given to Boca Helping Hands. Representing Florida Atlantic University at the dinner was Mary Jane Saunders, president of Florida Atlantic University. “We here at FAU are always impressed by the generosity of our local community,” said Saunders. “So many of the students at Florida Atlantic University are first generation in college, and scholarship support is very important to all of them so they may complete their degrees.” For more information about GBREPC membership and events, please contact Paul Roman, vice president of membership at 561-862-4139.
