Human Powered Delray to Convene Ped-Bike Supporters and Government Officials

Advocacy group aims to spark a movement at its next public meeting, Saturday, May 3. In December, Human Powered Delray listened to input from over 100 residents about how to make the city more pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly. Since then, the new civic group has synthesized the public input, formed a board of directors, and met with government officials. The group is now ready to share the results of their efforts since December’s public meeting. But it has another more ambitious goal for the next meeting: to spark a movement. Human Powered Delray invites residents of Delray Beach to a public meeting at the Delray Beach Public Library, Saturday, May 3 at 9:30 a.m. More than just sharing information, the meeting is being planned in an interactive way to allow people to begin working on next steps during the meeting. After a brief presentation, attendees will be invited to move to small focus group tables looking at different aspects of making the city more conducive to human- powered transportation. Focus group tables will include bike lanes, events, a Ped-Bike Master Plan, and others. Human Powered Delray has also invited government officials to attend the meeting, including Ped-Bike Coordinator for the Metropolitan Planning Organization Bret Baronak and Sustainability Officer for Delray Beach John Morgan. “It’s important for us to bring residents and government officials together because both groups have to be part of any long-lasting and comprehensive solution,” said Bruce Bastian, chairman of Human Powered Delray. Rates of pedestrian and bicyclist injuries and fatalities in Florida are among the highest in the country. In the last five years, Palm Beach County has ranked in the top five worst areas in the state. Delray Beach continues to struggle to upgrade its pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure. Human Powered Delray wants to help the city harness the energy of many residents who want to make it safer, easier, and more fun to walk and bicycle in this All-America City.
