Delray Beach commissioners selected Michael Cernech to be the next city manager last month, but Cernech will not step into the role, according to a press release from the city of Delray.
The release said that the city and Cernech “mutually and amicably agreed to step away from contract negotiations to hire Cernech as the new city manager.”
The commission will discuss how to move forward with the recruitment process for a permanent city manger at their next meeting, according to the release.
“From the start, it was important that we come to terms that were acceptable to both parties. Unfortunately in this case we simply could not get there. We were excited at the possibility of having Mr. Cernech lead our team, and regret that it is no longer possible,” Mayor Shelly Petrolia said in a statement.
Interim City Manager Neal de Jesus, who has held the position for the last six months, will continue to serve until a permanent manager is selected.
